Q&A: Sleep Apnea?

Question by wilsimba@sbcglobal.net: Sleep Apnea? What is sleep apnea? I am fourteen and am overweight. I sleep for 8 hours eveyday, but I'm always tired. I have frequent headaches and seem to be fatigued no matter how much I sleep. My family has a history of diabetes. My uncle sleeps a lot, but he stays awake for days at a time. Could diabetes cause this as well (I didn't have it last time I went to my doc).

What type of sleep disorder may this be?

Question by ricki c: What type of sleep disorder may this be? Hello,I recently had a sleep study done and the finding are i have a sleep disorder and i am being refered to a sleep disorder specialist.I was told i do not go into the deep sleep(REM) and that the maintance of the other sleep stages are disordered.Wanted to know if anyone has this type of problem and how they are dealing with it or what has helped them to feel well rested,as it has been many years since i have gotten a good nights rest.Appreciate all feedback.

Best answer:

Answer by Morfeous
There are two main types of sleep: Non-REM (NREM) sleep consists of four stages of sleep, each deeper than the last. REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep is when you do most active dreaming. Your eyes actually move back and forth during this stage, which is why it is called Rapid Eye Movement sleep. Stage 1 (Transition to sleep) – Stage 1 lasts about five minutes. Eyes move slowly under the eyelids, muscle activity slows down, and you are easily awakened. Stage 2 (Light sleep) – This is the first stage of true sleep, lasting from 10 to 25 minutes. Eye movement stops, heart rate slows, and body temperature decreases. Stage 3 (Deep sleep) – You’re difficult to awaken, and if you are awakened, you do not adjust immediately and often feel groggy and disoriented for several minutes. Stage 4 (More intense deep sleep) – The deepest stage of sleep. Brain waves are extremely slow. Blood flow is directed away from the brain and towards the muscles, restoring physical energy. Take care always......

Question by samantha a: what classes do you need to be a sleep disorder specialist? what classes do you need to be a sleep disorder specialist?

Best answer:

Answer by Sage
Unfortunately, there's no simple answer to this question. What you need to do is find out what schools in your area offer certification in Polysomnography (sleep disorder testing). Then you can see what those individual programs require because schools do vary in their curriculums.

Q&A: What alternatives are effective for sleep apnea, besides CPAP?

Question by Tim D: What alternatives are effective for sleep apnea, besides CPAP? I can't afford a CPAP machine right now. Are there any other alternatives that help with sleep apnea? I've tried a dental device before, but it hurts my jaw and teeth too much. Surgery is also not an option right now due to the cost. Is there anything else that can be done? I'm trying to lose weight, so no need to tell me that, either.

Best answer:

Answer by SethSpeaks
There are NO other alternatives that will help other than weight loss and CPAP. You can get a CPAP quite inexpensively these days. Less than $ 500 to save your life is not too bad. Start saving if you don't have insurance and don't qualify for assistance. Also, if you can afford anything at all, you can RENT a CPAP. It isn't cost efficient in thee long run, but in the short term it can help a lot. None of the other gimmicks will work. They are for normal snoring, not apnea. There is one alternative that can help if you sleep on your back.. for short term assistance until you figure out your machine options. get a towel and roll it and put it under your neck which will tip your chin towards the ceiling. If you can sleep like this, it will help. Not cure it or be perfect, but it will help.

Q&A: Are there any cures for snoring that really work?

Question by medium_of_dance: Are there any cures for snoring that really work? My boyfriend snores LOUDLY and I have to take sleeping pills when we stay together, but I don't want to make that a permanent thing. Those nose strips reduce it, but still it sounds like a herd of wildebeest. Any tried and tested reducers or cures that you know of?

Best answer:

Answer by sissyfyia
Have him get a sleep diagnostic study. They can determine why he snores and even if it is hurting his health. It is possible that he needs more oxygen when he sleeps. Some people develop sleep apneas and actually stop sleeping momentarily while they are asleep. There are actual options. Have him sleep with his chest open if he won't have a study done. This is usualy very helpful if there isn't an underlying cause. If he sleeps on his side it may be the reason, constricted airflow.

My father has been having a sleeping disorder for about 15 years?

Question by Maktoom: My father has been having a sleeping disorder for about 15 years? When my father goes to sleep he says that there is something bothering him. He slowly moves his head back and forward. Sometimes his hands move, and he has a very hard time falling a sleep. He is religious so he blames everything on ghosts and other spiritual creature bothering him. I feel that it is a sleeping disorder which possibly has a cure . We went to a doctor and they said that there is nothing wrong. Can you guys help me figure out what is wrong with him?

Best answer:

Answer by DeAnne
He should see a specialist in sleeping disorders. Or maybe it IS spiritual in which case he should visit a pastor; they'll know what to do. Maybe he needs a sleep aid like Melatonin (Walmart)

Do I have a sleeping disorder and what would the name of it be?

Question by Jillibean: Do I have a sleeping disorder and what would the name of it be? Okay, whenever I go to sleep, every single night, it's like I go into a temporary coma or something. I sleep extremely hard and no matter what noise goes off I can't wake up unless someone comes in and shakes me awake. I'm not sure if this is a sleeping disorder or not but it has come to my attention that that is a possibility and I was just wondering what you all thought.

Best answer:

Answer by Nurse For 20 Years
That doesn't sound like any disorder. You just sound like a very sound sleeper and there's nothing wrong with that.

Question by Peter: Anti snoring pillow, snoring remedies that work? I need informacion about snoring remedies that work! Thanks for the help!

Best answer:

Answer by baseball_is_my_life
When a person who snores rolls over on to their side, the snoring is greatly reduced because the pressure on their throats is lessened. There are also nasal strips out there that claim to expand the airways in your nostrils.

Q&A: What is a god way for my parents to stop snoring?

Question by KB: What is a god way for my parents to stop snoring? They just recently got back together and they are 60 years old. They both snore so bad that they keep each other awake at night. They've had to resort to sleeping in separate rooms, it's so bad. What can they try to maybe not snore, or not snore so intensely? They snore in all positions so rolling each other over does not work. Does anyone know if those pillows that are supposed to stop snoring actually work? Does anyone know what they can try?

I have a sleeping disorder and need help?

Question by KingDork: I have a sleeping disorder and need help? I have a pretty bad sleeping disorder. Now, even nine hours of sleep is not enough. I get to bed at around 10 or 10:30 then wake at 6. And I have a problem waking up. Even when awake it takes a long time for my body to motivate. Like, half an hour of being awake in bed to get up, an hour if it is not a school day. Then when I get home for school I need about two more hours of sleep. How can I break this habit?

Best answer:

Answer by Hagen
Do you do any physical exercise? I'm guessing not.
