Q&A: Sleep apnea???

Question by Raven M: Sleep apnea??? Are there any exercises (oral) that a person can do to strengthen their neck muscles & mouth muscles, to help stop sleep apnea? Are there any books on this subject? There has to be another way of helping this condition other than operations. (yes I am working to lose weight) Thanks!

Hello, I'm sorry you've OSA. No. There aren't any exercises to firm up your airways. You do need to lose extra weight. That can minimize/eliminate symptoms. There are expensive dental appliances of minimal use. Standard therapy is by C-PAP machine. These machines are wonderful now. Years ago, they were horrible. Please look up sites on this, & educate yourself. OSA kills. Don't be a victim. Good Luck.

a sleep disorder is when your tired thru the day, if your not tired during the day I would say no you don't have a sleep disorder you just don't require that many hours of sleep to function.

Have you ever had surgery for sleep apnea?

Question by joe_blue_collar: Have you ever had surgery for sleep apnea? Have you had surgery to treat sleep apnea? What was your experience like?

Best answer:

Answer by sarge927
I have sleep apnea and the CPAP machine works for me, but my father-in-law had the surgery to remove his uvula and he regrets it. He finds it's a lot easier to choke when eating and it hasn't really helped him. The other surgery is where they break your jaw and realign it, and just the thought of the surgery and the recovery was enough to scare me off...
